Department of Aging in U.S. States

State aging departments provide a multitude of senior citizen services, elder care services and resources, and family caregiver support. The states' departments of aging also coordinate area agencies on aging in most states, and handle state-wide long-term care issues, health issues, legal protection, abuse, and other aging issues.

Each Area Agencies on Aging is responsible for a specific geographic area - either a city, a single county or a multi-county district. The Agencies are designed to address the needs and concerns of all older Americans at the local level.

Area Agencies on Aging may provide specific services to help caregivers and elder care services in their geographic area. Such services may include but not be limited to: caregiver counseling, caregiver training, meal programs, respite care, care companions, homemaker services, medical help, transportation, shopping services, support groups, home modification, legal services and much more.
